~ Synopsis ~
Amy has kept her distance from men after her sleazy ex took everything from her—everything but her daughter, Paisley, whom Amy would do anything to protect. She’s learned to keep her guard up, but it’s getting harder and harder to do around a man like Mike, whose penetrating gaze leaves her speechless. Mike is unlike any man Amy has ever met. He’s patient, kind, a loving father, ripped, and, amazingly, seeming way into her. Still, Amy makes it clear that she has no intention of the two of them being more than friends. But when threats from her past put Paisley in danger, Amy finds that more with Mike just might save her life…and her heart.
~ My Review ~
Although More is a standalone, it is part of The Body Works trilogy. I haven’t read any of the other books in the trilogy, but it wasn’t an issue. Everything a reader needed to know about Amy’s past was worked into the narrative of this story. More is a slow starter. So much so that I’m afraid I would have put it aside had I not agreed to write this review. I’m glad I stuck with it. The suspense built ever so slowly until it nearly exploded at the end.
The romance crept slowly forward as well. Amy and Mike were nearly teenagers with their slow re-discovery of love making. I didn’t know whether I should remind them that they have children and surely know how to get it on or just giggle at their slow progress. In the end, it was just what the characters needed to repair the wounds in their hearts.
I didn’t connect with Amy much. She’s into all the things I couldn’t care less about: hair and fashion. Normally, I get annoyed when writers take up time to describe outfits in detail. I’ll give Kincade a pass, though, as Amy’s outfits were an essential part of her personality. Now, Mike, Mike I’d love to connect with. He almost seemed too good to be true. Almost. He shows he’s a real person, though, with flaws and all, which just made me fall for the man even more.
There were a few comical moments (porn, anyone?) that made me giggle. I would have loved to see more of these funny happenings.
Although More was a bit slow and somewhat on the too many pages’ side for my liking, I did enjoy the story and I’m glad I stuck with it.
